First impressions at TeTui

First impressions at Te Tui- Te Tui centre for the arts

We parked behind the art center and passed a very artistic kindergarten next to the center. There were many art works hanging on the window. I was amazed by the art works which were made by those tiny, chubby hands. Living in New Zealand, children can pick up any arts any time from such a natural circumstances. The beauty of
nature is the most natural text book for people to study. Falling leaves, the scenery…..and so on, I am so touched by the beauty of nature.

Before the artist’s talk, I took some information data from the reception and found out some activities
at the Auckland festival 2009/ 5-22,Mar. Read visual arts guide and the introduction about
“F for Fake” exhibition.
.The Artist’s Talk: Shigeyuki Kihara
Friday 13th Mar, 11:30 am

Shigeyuki Kihara is a Samoan-born multimedia and performance artist. Her father is Japanese, her mother is Samoan. Her art work is based on the native cultures of the Pacific- and more specifically the Samoan Culture, history and spirituality. Her exhibition is a series of black T- shirts with ironic changing spelling from the famous brand. Like
Fab ---Fob
Warehouse –Whorehouse
Countdown ---Coconutdown
KFC--- KKK, that means fast food is killing pacific Island community. The civilization will destroy the health and the balance of Samoan culture and community.

It made me think further about the contradiction between civilization and original culture. And also ask how to keep the balance between the taking and the giving.

. F for Fake is interested in the idea of mischief as both an act of play and
as a political gesture. First entering the “F for Fake” exhibition, I tried to type on the keyboard to get some information from the screen. It’s tricky because it’s fake. We all smiled. I dared not to touch anything, as it could be “Fake” as well. I feel like I already became a character standing in a performance stage , we are playing “Hide and Seek” with these Fake art works. And the directors are the artists including: F. Connor, R. Dickinson, Gelatin, Kar, G. Hayward, S. Kihara, L.L. Invisibles, D. Mitchell and W. Olds.

looks at tricks, counterfeits, confusion, re-enactment and repeats. F for Fake backtracks, does
a double-up, and asks-what might we learn from repetition?

The exhibition of Andy Warhol During Jan. 1 ~ Mar. 29 in Taipei

During last Christmas holidays in Taipei, I visited some musems and special exhibitions in Taipei.
The most inspired me are the Stunning Decorative Porcelain from the Ch'ien-lung Reign(Ch'ien-lung is one of emperors in Chin dynasty during 1741~1744 ) in the National Palace Museum. Another one is Andy Wharhol exhibition in the National Chiang Kai-sheck Memorial Hall during Jan 01 to Mar. 29, 2009.
From ancient to modern, those arts belong to quite different background and history, but they all be displayed in the gallery for exhibition during the same period and same city, Taipei.
Pope of Pop—Andy Warhol World Tour Exhibition” began in Europe and arrived in Asia with Taiwan as its first stop. European and American collectors and foundations jointly planned and organized the exhibition. The exhibition features works from Warhol’s entire career, including more than 120 pieces of art works from 1957 to 1986, acrylic paintings, silkscreen prints, watercolor paintings, magazine cover designs, and twenty-eight pictures that have never been seen in Taiwan.
Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) is one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. The leader of pop art, he dominated America’s pop art world. Andy Warhol established a splendid way to portray modern celebrities including world famous stars, movie stars, artists, gallery agents. Their portraits had all turned into art. Warhol loved painting the most prominent people in society: Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Elizabeth Taylor, Mao Tse-tung. Everyone vied for a “timeless” portrait by Warhol, and every portrait is a symbol of beauty, power, and the sophisticated world. Warhol is just like a modern court artist. His goal was not only create arts also create his worth.
Through silkscreening and duplication of prints, Warhol broke the boundary between popular objects and art, transforming pop culture into art. It makes me feel more comfortable to face art and shorten the distance between people and art. Everything can be treated as a kind of art. Just like the course I am sudying in visual art. It has broadened my view about art. The objects with different stories will present the different styles of arts
After knowing Andy Warhol and his art works, a conclusion is reached: although Warhol constantly renewed his art forms and created new techniques, he had always been, as in his nature, a conceptual artist.
"In the future everyone will be famouse for fifteen minutes" ~Andy warhol

Why did I come to MSVA

I have always been interested in craftmaking since my childhood. Before I beccome a student of the Certificate of Jewellery Techniques program at MIT, I have learned porcelain painting for a few years, and without any prior knowledge about jewellery making. During 2 years studing, MIT has offered a full range of jewellery techniques for students,I have learnt a lot and it was very exciting and challenging experence.

At the beginning of 2 years ago, I was struggling with the using of sawblade. Now I feel the more I learned, the more I want to know about the world of every kinds of art. I once tried to make a jewellery piece with the combination of porcelain with my painting and metal. I intended to make the same stuff with a series themes. It inspired me to make some objects with different materials.

I am expecting this diploma course in MIT and I hope I can experiment with further knowledge and skills about every kinds of art working. I enjoy the related field about art and it already opened another window for my own life.
